IB Middle Years Programme

George Washington High School

International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP)

Program Overview

George Washington High School offers the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students in grades 9 and 10. The MYP is a globally recognized, rigorous academic framework designed to develop students who are critical thinkers, effective communicators, and engaged global citizens.

The MYP emphasizes inquiry-based learning, conceptual understanding, and real-world application across all subject areas. Students are encouraged to make meaningful connections between their learning and the world around them while developing strong academic skills that prepare them for future success.

At GWHS, the MYP serves as an honors-level academic pathway that prepares students for advanced coursework, including the IB Diploma Programme and other college-preparatory opportunities.

Why Choose the MYP?

Students in the MYP benefit from an academically challenging program that develops both knowledge and skills essential for success in high school and beyond.

Through the MYP, students:

  • Develop strong reading, writing, speaking, and analytical skills
  • Learn how to think critically and creatively
  • Engage in learning that connects to global and local contexts
  • Build independence, resilience, and academic confidence
  • Prepare for the demands of advanced high school coursework and postsecondary study

The MYP supports the development of the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally—while maintaining high expectations and meaningful support.

MYP at GWHS: Our Purpose

George Washington High School proudly offers the MYP as a selective honors program designed to expand opportunity, foster academic excellence, and inspire students to reach their full potential.

The MYP at GWHS was established to:

  • Provide a rigorous academic option for motivated students
  • Encourage students to remain engaged in their neighborhood school
  • Prepare students for future success in advanced academic pathways
  • Promote equity, access, and high expectations for all learners

Our MYP students are challenged to think deeply, act responsibly, and grow into reflective learners who are prepared to succeed in college, careers, and life.

Application and Enrollment

GWHS is a Choice School

George Washington High School is a Choice School, and admission to the MYP requires applying through the GoCPS application process managed by Chicago Public Schools.

Step-by-Step GoCPS Application Process

  1. Create a GoCPS Account

Families must create an account at the GoCPS Portal:

go.cps.edu

This account will be used to explore programs, submit applications, and receive results.

  1. Explore Programs

Using the CPS School Search Tool, families can:

  • Learn about GWHS and the MYP
  • Review eligibility requirements
  • Understand how seats are offered (lottery or points-based)
  • Review any priorities such as sibling or proximity preferences
  1. Attend School Events or Screenings (If Required)

Families are encouraged to attend:

  • Open Houses
  • Information sessions
  • Any required screenings (exams, auditions, etc.)

Scheduling for screenings (if applicable) is completed through the GoCPS portal.

  1. Apply and Rank Programs (Apply Phase – Fall)

During the Fall application window:

  • Students may apply to up to 20 programs
  • Programs must be ranked in true order of preference
  • GWHS should be ranked based on student interest and fit
  1. Submit the Application

All applications are submitted online through the GoCPS portal before the published deadline.

  1. Receive Results (Spring)

In the Spring, students receive:

  • One best offer through the GoCPS system
  • Offers are determined by:
    • A computerized lottery or
    • A points-based system (grades and/or test scores), depending on the program
  •

If a student qualifies for multiple programs, the system awards the highest-ranked eligible offer.

Key Things to Know

  • Lottery / Points-Based Selection: Seats are offered through a lottery or points system, depending on program criteria.
  • Ranking Matters: Students receive one offer—their highest-ranked eligible choice.
  • Priorities May Apply: Sibling, staff, or proximity preferences may apply; families should review program profiles carefully.
  • Neighborhood vs. Choice Schools: Students may attend their neighborhood school without applying, but must apply through GoCPS for any Choice or Selective Enrollment school, including GWHS.

For the most current application timelines, eligibility details, and instructions, families should always refer to the official Chicago Public Schools GoCPS website.
